It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film debuted, establishing Pixar as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
