As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, equating to 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Developments

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that covers the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Yet in recent months, the current regional administration appealed to the judicial authority to propose a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Court Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, the court complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout the city recorded air quality peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak levels ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Factors

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple research.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 early fatalities each year in the capital.
