Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in different industries.
